Artificial sweeteners, or sugar substitutes, as a replacement for regular sugar, will decrease your overall calorie intake but they often “trick” the body because the body doesn’t receive any sugar or calories. As a result, the body’s metabolism’s ability to respond and react to sweetness decreases which could lead to higher blood glucose and weight gain.
Artificial sweeteners also impact your body in other ways, such as: causing headaches, upset stomachs, cravings, and more. However, sugar substitutes are helpful to those who have diabetes and other health conditions that require a managed blood sugar level – but it does not mean that artificial sweeteners are “better” than eating sugar.
